The tranquil town of Medulin is situated on the Riviera of the same name, rich in enchanting beaches lapped by the typical blue, crystal-clear Croatian sea. Just 15 minutes from Pula and about an hour from Poreč and Rovinj, it is an excellent base for visiting some of Istria’s most beautiful locations.
A large number – and variety – of beaches and islets easily accessible by boat, coupled with excellent facilities and the proximity of charming historical towns and a beautiful natural area (the Premantura peninsula) make the Medulin Riviera an ideal destination for a couple of days or a week’s holiday.
Here, as in other seaside resorts in Croatia, one of the most enjoyable moments of the holiday is dinner. You cannot say no to the succulent fresh fish dishes that have made Croatian cuisine famous, but in Medulin a local speciality is truffles. It is well worth sampling.
Medulin is a typical seaside resort: the main attractions in the area are its beautiful beaches. However, a holiday in Medulin is not necessarily lazy: you can enjoy many sports activities, including of course water sports such as sailing, surfing, diving and fishing. In addition, the area is rich in footpaths and biking trails surrounded by greenery, suitable for all levels.
Although there are no noteworthy museums or monuments, the centre of Medulin is lovely, with a beautiful church and many small shops, restaurants and markets, as well as a beautiful view of the islets in front of it.
During a holiday in Medulin take the opportunity to visit Pula, which can be reached by car in about 15 minutes: it is one of the most important towns in Istria, famous for its Roman amphitheatre just a few steps from the sea.
If you are a nature lover, don’t miss out on the Premantura peninsula, a particularly impressive protected natural area.
With more time on your hands, you can also visit Poreč and Rovinj, two charming seaside towns steeped in history. They can be reached by car in 50 minutes to an hour.
The town beach in the centre of Medulin is small and often crowded, but it is perfect for those who want to have all the amenities at their fingertips.
Bijeca is Medulin’s most famous beach. It is a 1 km long sandy beach with gently sloping seabed and plenty of facilities, sports equipment and play areas, making it ideal for all types of holidaymakers, including those travelling with small children.
Two other beautiful beaches on the Medulin Riviera are Alba Chiara, a pebble beach, and Belvedere, a long pebble beach bordered by a modern promenade.
A wilder looking, though easily accessible, beach is Skrape, a rocky beach popular with locals.
Absolutely not to be missed are the beaches of the Medulin Islands, a group of ten uninhabited islets that can be reached from the Riviera by private boat or taxi boat: we particularly recommend Ceja and Levan. On some you can find a couple of bars and restaurants, but in general these beaches have a more remote and wild feel than those on the mainland and you will have a better chance of finding a quiet corner all to yourself.
If you’re staying for several days it’s also worth exploring the beaches of nearby Premantura, perfect for nature lovers.
The Medulin Riviera is a highly developed tourist area and therefore offers plenty of accommodation to suit all budgets. The recommended accommodation is flats, but you can also choose from hotels, B&Bs, tourist resorts, residences and campsites, all of which offer good value for money.
However, don’t be fooled by so much choice: this is still a very touristy area, so if you are travelling during the high season, typically July and August, it is a good idea to book well in advance if you want to get the best prices.
We offer a selection of hotels at Medulin to suit all categories of travellers. The most booked by tourists are the sea-facing hotels, often right on the beach. If you want to play it safe, choose one of the following: they are among the most booked hotels in Medulin, sorted by number of reviews.
If you prefer space, privacy and the ability to prepare your own meals to a hotel holiday, book a holiday home at Medulin. We recommend a few below, but in this case we advise you to book early because houses and apartments for rent at Medulin are in high demand.
